Val d’Isere is a world-class ski resort in the French Alps with splendid mountain views, many snowboarding fun times and tons of activities to keep your family entertained throughout your stay.
So if you ask me how I feel at the start of every ski season, I would say that it is one of my favourite times of year. That fresh, mountain air; fluffy, white snow and hitting the slopes for a day of fun and exercise and the great Apres-ski.
With over 300 km of groomed slopes and even more off piste runs, Val d’Isere remains my favourite ski resort in the French Alps and there’s always something new to explore time after time.
Val d’Isere, a popular luxury ski holiday destination.
Nestled in France’s Haute Savoie region near the Italian border, Val d’Isere offers beautiful mountain views and a charming village to explore. It’s well known among skiers and snowboarders around the world for being home to the notorious “La Face de Bellevard”, an extremely challenging run made famous during the 1992 Winter Olympics.
This season, the ski area opens on November 24th. With ski runs ranging from beginners to the most advanced, the vast ski area allows you to build up your confidence (and skills) during your stay and progress to more challenging runs. Don’t be afraid, the world-class runs are not only for professionals. So if you dare, try the “La Face”, it really is thrilling!
The Ski Area, the best of the French Alps
The Haute Savoie region has its own micro-climate, which typically delivers excellent snowfall year after year. Despite this, Val d’Isere has the biggest snow-making facility of its kind in all of Europe. It ensures that the slopes are covered in a perfect, powdery snow. This also means that your beautiful snow resort vacation that you booked months ago will not be ruined if the weather decides to not cooperate. A guaranteed fun, snow-filled ski holiday in high altitude; what could be better?
There are 78 lifts which run across a number of valleys, starting at the Pissaillas glacier and heading through the Solaise and Bellevarde areas on the way to Tignes. Runs spread between 1800m and over 3000m can be accessed through lifts, cable cars, and even the underground funicular railway.
When you tire of the slopes, the beautiful hamlet of Val d’Isere is sure to have something to suit your needs. With five star chalets and ski resorts and Michelin star quality restaurants, it draws everyone from the average Joe to billionaires ready to blow the budget. A perfect place to sit by the fire and soak the great atmosphere.
Family Skiing and Guaranteed snow cover
With runs for all ages and abilities, Val d’Isere is a perfect place to bring your family. Skiing with kids can be difficult. There are ski schools as well as child care services so that you can hit the slopes without having to worry about the little ones. Solaise is a fun and safe area. It has many beginner slopes for you to pass on your love of skiing to your children.
Val d’Isere offers a Family pass for those staying for 6 to 7 days, with amazing discounted rates. The “Avant-première offer” this year runs until the 21 of December. It will cost you 212 euros per skier for 6 days and 247,50 euros for each member of the family for the 7 days pass. And the best part is, you can extend your pass for 1 or 2 extra days, should you decide to try cross country skiing – head for the main track loops in La Daille, Le Manchet, Laisinant and L’Ouillette in the Solaise ski area.
The Family Pass also offers free access to the lounge, free entry to the swimming pool at the Centre Aquasportif and free wifi (a must for those kids who just can’t put down their phones). Skiing is fun and those are great deals to start the ski season on the right foot.
Apres-Ski and Other activities at Val d’Isere
The Apres-ski at Val d’Isere is something to experience. Right by the La Daille gondola (with a brand new high speed 10-person gondola), there’s the famous “Folie Douce” which involves iconic live bands, aerial acrobatic performances and that too hard dancing on the tables moments. That will surely make you stay in the next day and get a relaxing spa treatment.
Val d’Isere lively bars and nightlife atmosphere is one of its kind with great DJ’s, busy dance floors and a wide selection of fine wines, beers and cocktails.
And if you haven’t had enough exercise on the slopes, there’s aquabike, paragliding, driving around an ice circuit in a BMW near La Daille, ice diving in freezing cold waters, ice climbing, yoga, Zumba, and my personal favourite: dog sledding. Where else can you do all that?
Valkids, skiing with kids aged 4 to 10
With guaranteed snow, a season ending on May 1st and runs available for every skill type and plenty of activities off the slopes, Val d’Isere is the perfect family ski resort for you to have a beautiful mountain vacation. This ski area is one of my go-to ski resorts and I have been there many times.
